The Auditor's Office
Elections are one of the most recognizable functions of the Auditor. But...
Amazing Range ...did you know that the Auditor also issues marriage licenses, vehicle and boat licenses, and records property deeds and titles?
I bet that you didn't know that the Auditor’s Office manages Animal Control services for unincorporated Pierce County? That’s 10,000 calls a year, that cover over 1,600 square miles. “The mission of the Pierce County Auditor’s Office is to conduct honest and accurate elections; maintain the integrity and accessibility of the public record; provide efficient, licensing services; and protect, promote and balance the well being and safety of animals and impacted citizens.”
Modernizing Services With the use of new technology, I’ve made government services more efficient.
Election results are four times faster. Online transactions have increased by 40 percent, and grow everyday, as we provide more services online. We now provide vehicle and vessel title transfers within 30 minutes, rather than two or three weeks. Couples can complete their marriage applications online and not waste their bliss in our waiting room.
Transparent and Accountable I’m ethical and honest. That’s important to me. That’s why I have:
Removed the Auditor’s name from 94 kinds of print and equipment. You won’t see my name on your ballot envelope. Refused money and endorsements from election workers, employees, and candidates. I am sensitive about the appearance of conflict of interest. Improved Public Records Requests. Citizens aren’t our enemy. I want to make it easy for citizens to request public information.
Navigating the Web of Government The volume of “wrong way” customers drains government resources and frustrates you, the public.
Very few people know what the Auditor’s Office does and doesn’t do.
Everyday, I get calls from “wrong way” customers: Seniors who need help with their property taxes, teens who want to take their first motor vehicle driving exam, or someone looking for a copy of their birth certificate. I have committed myself completely to helping government reengineer its communications and ATTITUDE to prevent “wrong way” customers. At the very least, we can improve the way that government can receive and reconnect wrong way citizens.
Animal Control is a terrific example. Pierce County has six different jurisdictions that provide animal control and pet licensing. At this time, it’s up to you to figure this out. It’s confusing and frustrating for anyone who may have found a colony of feral cats, encountered a dangerous dog, or simply needs to report an abused or injured animal. Who do you call?
I am leading an effort to simplify this system: Common marketing materials, a central web portal for licensing and animal control (regardless of your address), and a universal pet license are on my 2012 to-do list.
Citizenship In 2011, I helped bring home the Citizenship Ceremony for Pierce County’s immigrants. We saw 96 of our neighbors from 38 different countries (Laos to Liberia!) take their oath of allegiance right here in Tacoma. This is going to be a permanent fixture in our community. Why do I care? I want to raise awareness about citizenship. And, I want each and every one of us to recognize our responsibilities as citizens.
